Tourist traps to avoid in Prague: Trap #4: Taxi from Prague airport (and how people overpay in 10 minutes)
You land in Prague.
You’re tired.
You just want to get to your hotel.
That’s exactly the moment this works.
What happens at the airport
You walk out of arrivals.
And almost immediately, someone approaches you.
- friendly
- confident
- sometimes in a vest or holding a sign
“Taxi? City center?”
They look official enough.
They’re not.
If you want to start your trip right, it helps to know what to expect before you land.
How the system works
There are people at the airport whose job is simple:
👉 get you into the wrong car
They might:
- stand right outside the terminal
- guide you away from the official area
- use phrases like “official taxi”
But since 2023, there is only one official partner:
👉 Uber Airport
Everything else — you need to double-check.
What can go wrong
Once you agree, a few things happen:
- “Taximeter is broken” → fixed price (1,500–2,000 CZK)
- or the meter runs… very creatively
- or the final price is just “different” than expected
We explain how to avoid this right at the beginning of our tours.
A normal ride to the center is around:
👉 700 CZK with Uber
So you can see the gap.
The simple solution
Don’t negotiate. Don’t improvise.
Just do this:
👉 open the Uber app
👉 or use the Uber kiosk inside the airport
You’ll see the price before you even get in.
It stays the same.
Important rule
If someone approaches you offering a ride:
👉 ignore them
Official drivers don’t do that.
A cheaper option (if you don’t mind one transfer)
You can also take public transport:
- trolleybus 59 → to metro A (Nádraží Veleslavín)
- bus 100 → to metro B (Zličín)
It’s slower, but very cheap and reliable.
If something already feels wrong
If you’re already in the car and things don’t add up:
- ask for a receipt
- take a photo of the driver ID and license plate
- and if needed, call the police (156 or 158)
It’s rare, but it happens.
Final thought
Prague isn’t trying to trick you.
But the airport is one of those places where some people still try.
And they rely on one thing:
👉 you being tired and not thinking too much
Want to avoid this kind of stuff completely?
If something feels slightly off, it usually is.If you’d rather skip the guesswork and just get Prague explained properly:
